The Chilton County Board of Education approved Christy Mims as the new principal for Jemison Middle School during a voting session on June 16.
She said she is “excited” about moving to the principal position at the middle school and to be working with the faculty and staff there.
“They have a great Project Lead the Way program,” Mims said. “I am really excited to work with that as well. Looking forward to working with other programs within the community and sports and working with their career tech and FCCLA and FFA programs as well.”
Mims has been the assistant principal at Jemison High School for seven years. As an administrator, Mims has enjoyed helping students grow and pursue what they want to do after graduation.
Prior to becoming an assistant principal, Mims taught eighth grade science at Jemison Middle School.
“When this position became available at Jemison Middle, I saw it as a good opportunity for me to be back at home,” Mims said. “Jemison has been a great community and it has been very supportive, and I felt like I was going to be back at home. A good opportunity.”
Mims said she anticipates a good working relationship with the high school.
Her parents were influential in her choosing education as a career.
“Both of my parents influenced me to become an educator,” Mims said. “They encouraged me to enter a profession that challenged me to become a lifelong learner and help others.”
Mims said she had always been interested in math and science.
She completed a general science bachelor’s degree at Auburn University and has “taught just about every science class you can imagine in grades six through 12.”
While working at the University of Montevallo as a student intern coordinator, Mims began thinking about pursuing a degree in educational leadership. She completed her master’s degree in educational administration at the University of Montevallo.
Mims began her teaching career in Georgia. She has worked in Dallas County Schools and Verbena High School.
